United Through Art: A Merdeka Celebration of Home, Heritage and Love

Every year on 31 August, Malaysians come together to celebrate the freedom of our nation. At Art & Lifestyle Gallery, we wanted to celebrate Merdeka in the language we know best — through art and stories.

This year, the gallery brings together Malaysian artists from different hometowns, backgrounds and generations with one shared message: no matter where we come from, Malaysia is our home.

Art has a beautiful way of expressing feelings that sometimes cannot be put into words. Through a brushstroke, a familiar fruit, an old neighbourhood or a childhood memory, an artist can tell us what home truly means. For this Merdeka celebration, each artist shares a piece of Malaysia through their own eyes.

Different Hometowns. Different Stories. One Malaysia.

For Yeo Eng Peng, born in Muar, Johor, the humble pineapple becomes a symbol of hope, positivity and gratitude. His pineapple artworks carry memories of Johor and remind us to appreciate the blessings of the land we call home.

For Angelo Chia, born in Klang, the durian tells another Malaysian story. Tough and strong on the outside yet soft within, it becomes his expression of strength, unity and warmth — qualities he sees in the Malaysian people.

For Alex Leong, born in Penang, love for Malaysia lives within our heritage. Through his paintings, familiar places, traditions and memories are preserved so that the stories of yesterday are not forgotten by tomorrow’s generation.

And for Dabby Wong, born in Melaka and bringing these artists together as curator, Malaysia’s multicultural heritage is where the journey begins. Growing up among different cultures, traditions and stories created a belief that Malaysian art deserves not only to be exhibited, but to be seen, remembered and shared with the world.

These stories may begin in different places — Penang, Klang, Melaka and Muar — but they all lead back to the same place. Home.

We Show Our Love Through Art

Patriotism does not always need to be expressed through big words. Sometimes, love for our country is found in an artist quietly painting a memory he refuses to let disappear. It is found in the colours of our culture. It is found in the places where we grew up, the food and fruits we recognise instantly, the traditions passed down by our parents and grandparents, and the stories we hope our children will continue telling.

Every artwork becomes a little piece of Malaysia. And when we bring these pieces together, we begin to see something much bigger than an exhibition. We see who we are.

We may paint differently. We may tell different stories. We may come from different hometowns. But we share the same home.

At Art & Lifestyle Gallery, we unite artists because we believe art can connect the North, Central and South; different generations, cultures and communities.

On this 31 August, Art & Lifestyle Gallery proudly celebrates the artists who express their love for Malaysia through their art and preserve our country’s stories for generations to come. May Malaysian art continue to travel beyond our cities and beyond our borders, carrying with it the stories, memories and spirit of the country we proudly call home.
