A Simple Idea, A Meaningful Beginning

I have always believed that art should not be confined to the walls of a gallery.

Art is part of our everyday lives. It exists in our memories, our culture, the places we visit and the stories we share. Sometimes, all we need is to bring art a little closer to people.

When Mr Yeo Eng Peng and I first discussed transforming the lobby of Alila Bangsar into an art exhibition space, we shared a simple vision: to create an environment where people could encounter Malaysian art naturally, even without planning to visit an art gallery.

A hotel lobby is a place where people come and go. Some are travelling, some are meeting friends, and others are simply passing through. We wanted to turn those ordinary moments into opportunities to discover something beautiful.

And with Pink October approaching, we felt that this exhibition could carry an even greater purpose.

Behind the Scenes: A Day of Hard Work

Our exhibition setup began early in the morning.

At 9:00 AM, we gathered with artist Mr Yeo Eng Peng and two Rotaractors from the Rotaract Club of Bukit Bintang, Roger and John.

Together, we carefully packed the artworks, prepared the wooden easels and transported everything to Alila Bangsar.

Preparing a wooden easel during the exhibition setup

At first, the idea seemed quite straightforward. Bring the paintings, arrange the easels and create an exhibition.

But the reality was very different.

Every painting needed careful handling. Every easel had to be positioned thoughtfully. We had to consider the surrounding architecture, the lighting, the viewing angles and how the artworks would complement the hotel's interior.

We moved things around, adjusted the arrangements and stepped back countless times to see how everything looked.

Some paintings needed more breathing space. Others looked better when placed together, allowing their stories to connect.

It was not simply about displaying paintings. It was about transforming an ordinary space into an experience.

We started at 9:00 AM and continued working until 5:00 PM.

Eight hours of packing, carrying, arranging, adjusting and making sure everything was just right.

It may look easy when you see the finished exhibition, but behind every beautiful presentation are hours of preparation, teamwork and dedication.

Three Artists, Three Different Stories

For this special exhibition, Art & Lifestyle Gallery is proud to present works by three established Malaysian artists.

Alex Leong Yim Kuan captures the charm of Malaysian heritage, traditional architecture and nostalgic childhood memories. His watercolours invite us to revisit familiar places and appreciate the stories of our past.

Angelo Chia Seng Chai explores nature and everyday subjects through thoughtful artistic expression. His works encourage viewers to discover beauty and meaning in things we sometimes overlook.

Yeo Eng Peng celebrates tropical beauty, cultural identity and the richness of Malaysian life. His artworks bring together familiar objects and visual stories that reflect our local heritage.

Each artist has a different artistic language, yet their works share something meaningful: a connection to life, culture and the world around us.

When Art Becomes an Act of Giving

This exhibition is especially meaningful because it forms part of Yes to Pink 7.0, a breast cancer awareness and fundraising initiative.

In collaboration with Yes to Pink and Alila Bangsar Kuala Lumpur, we are bringing together art, community and compassion to support the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA).

A charity art auction will take place on 17 October 2026, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with 50% of artwork sale proceeds from the auction donated to BCWA.

For me, this is one of the most meaningful things art can do.

A painting can bring joy to someone's home, preserve a cultural memory and, at the same time, contribute to a cause that supports others.

Art becomes more than something we collect. It becomes a way to give.

The People Behind the Exhibition

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Mr Yeo Eng Peng for sharing this vision and personally helping to bring the exhibition to life.

My sincere thanks also go to Roger and John from the Rotaract Club of Bukit Bintang for dedicating their time and energy to the setup.

And of course, thank you to Alila Bangsar Kuala Lumpur, our generous venue sponsor, for welcoming our artworks into the hotel and supporting this meaningful initiative.

Behind every exhibition are people who believe in what we are trying to create.

Without their support, even the simplest idea would be difficult to realise.

Art Is Always Around Us

At the end of that long day, when I finally stepped back and looked at the completed display, I felt a quiet sense of satisfaction.

The completed display of banana, durian and watermelon paintings in the hotel lobby

The paintings were no longer sitting in storage or waiting inside a gallery. They had become part of a living space, ready to be discovered by someone walking past.

Perhaps a hotel guest will stop for a moment to admire a painting. Perhaps a child will become curious about the colours. Perhaps someone will recognise a familiar Malaysian street or remember a childhood experience.

That is what I hope to achieve.

I do not believe everyone needs to understand art to appreciate it.

Sometimes, looking is enough. Sometimes, feeling a connection is enough.

Art belongs to everyone, and art is always with us.

Through Art & Lifestyle Gallery, I hope to continue bringing art into different spaces, connecting artists with communities and creating meaningful experiences beyond the traditional gallery setting.

Because every artwork has a story, and every story deserves to be shared.
