The Snail
Small as it is, a snail can strip a vegetable patch in a single night. No wonder farmers can't stand it. Yet it is not as greedy as it looks. In rich soil, where crops grow strong, it nibbles only the old leaves. Where the soil is poor and plants struggle, it moves in and clears them away. It cannot see far ahead, but guided by instinct and its tentacles, it always turns up where it is needed. When it dies, its shell breaks down and returns calcium to the earth. That is its purpose. There are people like this around us too. They may seem to give little to the world, but they are here for a reason, one still waiting to be discovered.
