Angelo Chia Seng Chai
b. 1968, Klang, Selangor, Malaysia
With remarkable precision and a distinctive surreal touch, Angelo Chia Seng Chai elevates tropical fruits beyond their natural form. His watercolours unfold as visual poetry—where colour, symbolism, and imagination converge to inspire wonder and reflection, inviting viewers to discover hidden meanings within the beauty of everyday life.
Angelo Chia Seng Chai is a Malaysian watercolour artist known for his imaginative compositions and philosophical approach to everyday subjects. Born in Klang, Selangor, he developed a passion for art from a young age, later pursuing formal training at the Kuala Lumpur College of Art, where he graduated in 1989 under a scholarship programme. He later returned to the institution as a watercolour instructor in 1996 and 1997, contributing to the development of emerging artists.
Actively engaged in the art community, Angelo became a member of the Malaysian Watercolour Society (MWS) in 2005. His dedication and leadership within the society led to his appointment as Secretary, and subsequently as Secretary General from 2016 to 2020, and again from 2024 to 2025. His artistic excellence has been widely recognised, including the MWS Annual Exhibition Major Award (2010), as well as MWS Excellent Awards in 2023 (Winsor & Newton Award) and 2024 (Pro Art Award). In 2016, he was honoured as a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS), marking his recognition on an international level.
Angelo’s artistic identity is defined by his ability to transform familiar subjects into thought-provoking visual narratives. His paintings are characterised by meticulous detail, refined technique, and a strong sense of visual balance, often blending realism with imaginative expression. Beneath their striking appearance lies a deeper conceptual layer, where each composition functions as a philosophical proposition—encouraging viewers to reflect, question, and engage with multiple perspectives.
His works often feature natural elements—particularly tropical fruits—reimagined through highly detailed and carefully constructed compositions. By placing these objects in unexpected or surreal contexts, he challenges conventional perceptions and invites viewers into a space of curiosity and interpretation.
A consistent presence in exhibitions both locally and internationally, Angelo continues to contribute actively to the evolution of watercolour as a contemporary medium. His 2024 solo exhibition further reflects his ongoing exploration and commitment to expanding his artistic language.
His works are recognised for their precision, symbolic depth, and quiet surrealism, capturing attention while inviting contemplation. Through the interplay of form, colour, and concept, he creates a visual dialogue between the familiar and the unexpected.
More than an artist, Angelo Chia Seng Chai is a visual storyteller—transforming everyday forms into philosophical expressions. Through each work, he seeks to inspire visual delight while inviting moments of enlightenment and deeper reflection.
