With remarkable sensitivity and expressive watercolour techniques, Alex Leong Yim Kuan captures the timeless charm of heritage architecture, traditional streetscapes, and everyday life. Collected by the Penang State Art Gallery, his works celebrate the enduring beauty of Malaysian heritage.

Alex Leong Yim Kuan is a Malaysian watercolour artist known for capturing the quiet beauty of everyday life through delicate and expressive works. Born and raised in Penang, he grew up surrounded by heritage architecture, traditional trades, and vibrant street culture—elements that continue to shape the essence of his paintings. He received formal training at Equator Academy of Art, where he developed strong technical foundations and a lasting affinity for watercolour.

His artistic talent emerged early, earning the Penang State Pesta Art Competition (Young Talent Major Award, 1991/92), followed by notable achievements including the Malaysia Open Han Chiang Watercolour Competition (2003) and a Merit Award at the 1st Putrajaya National Watercolour Competition (2006). In recent years, his work has gained international recognition, including 2nd Prize at the International Architecture and Urban Landscape Watercolour Exhibition (2021), as well as awards from the Penang Watercolour Society (PWCS) and Malaysian Watercolour Society (MWS) between 2024 and 2025.

Since 1993, Alex has participated in more than 50 exhibitions locally and internationally, with showcases across China, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Korea. His solo exhibitions, beginning in 2012, have consistently explored themes of heritage, street life, and nostalgic moments, reflecting his deep connection to culture and memory.

A significant turning point came in 2015, when his works gained wider recognition through major art auctions such as The Edge Auction and Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers. Since then, his paintings have continued to appear in prominent regional and international auctions, strengthening his presence in the contemporary art scene.

His works are widely appreciated for their ability to evoke emotion and preserve cultural memory. Through soft washes, considered composition, and a strong sense of atmosphere, Alex transforms scenes of heritage architecture, quiet streets, and everyday moments into visual narratives that feel both familiar and timeless.

More than an artist, Alex Leong is a quiet storyteller—using watercolour as a medium to preserve time, memory, and the gentle beauty of ordinary life.
